My name is John, and I am the craftsman behind Refining Fire Forge.
My journey into blacksmithing began in December of 2006, when I hammered on my very first piece of steel. I had always enjoyed making things with my hands, but one day I decided I wanted to try blacksmithing. I quickly fell in love with the craft.
There is something special about taking a piece of steel, heating it in the fire, and shaping it with a hammer and anvil. What begins as a simple piece of raw material can become something useful, beautiful, and built to last. Over the years, I’ve come to appreciate every aspect of blacksmithing—from forging knives and lighting to creating cooking tools, camping gear, and custom pieces.
The Meaning Behind the Name
The name Refining Fire Forge is much more than a business name. It comes from Isaiah 48:10: “I have refined you, though not as silver; I have tested you in the furnace of affliction.”
When I was 19 years old, I was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease. Since then, I’ve faced some incredibly difficult times, including coming close to death twice and undergoing major surgeries.
For a long time, it would have been easy to look at those experiences as a curse. Instead, I began to see them differently.
Just as a blacksmith uses fire to refine and shape steel, I believe God can use the difficult seasons of our lives to refine us, strengthen us, and shape us into something useful.
The fire doesn’t destroy the steel—it transforms it.
That idea became the foundation of Refining Fire Forge.
More Than Just a Piece of Steel
When I make something for someone, I don’t want it to be just another item.
I want it to be one of a kind.
Every piece I create is made with the understanding that the person who owns it shouldn’t have something that looks exactly like everyone else’s. Whether it’s a custom knife, a piece of lighting, a cooking tool, camping equipment, or something completely unique, I want it to have its own character and story.
My goal is to create pieces that are not only useful and beautiful, but built to last for generations.
Something you can use.
Something you can be proud of.
Something you can eventually hand down to your children and grandchildren and say, “This was made for me.”
Keeping the Craft Alive
Blacksmithing is an old craft, but I believe its value hasn’t disappeared.
There is something meaningful about keeping traditional craftsmanship alive in a world where so many things are mass-produced, disposable, and made to be replaced.
At Refining Fire Forge, I strive to create things the old-fashioned way—with fire, steel, hammer, anvil, creativity, and a whole lot of hard work.
Every mark of the hammer becomes part of the story.
Every piece is a little different.
And that’s the way it should be.
